Give Me (and You) a Break: 5 Ways to Regain Your Sanity

March 17, 2019

I’ve spent the last couple of days in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and I’ve been startlingly reminded of something: It’s not just OK to rest, it’s VITAL! You don’t realize how stressed, tired, anxious, overwhelmed you are until you stop and truly let your mind and body have a break.

And I’m not just talking to weak losers here, you over achievers! I’m talking to you! The women I got to got away with this weekend are two of the most dynamic, organized, hardworking, got-it-together, successful people I know. (Love you girls, by the way!😘) WE ALL NEED REST—time to rejuvenate.

Girls’ trips are good for the soul. So are spa days. 💆🏼‍♀️🧖🏼‍♀️✌🏻But if you’re not in a place financially to get away, that’s not an excuse not to take some time for yourself. No matter where you are, here are some ideas for how to truly disconnect and give your mind, body and spirit the opportunity to restore.

  • Turn your phone off for several hours! It’s ok, if there is truly an emergency, people will find a way to contact you. P.S. Your work is not an emergency unless you are a trauma surgeon—even then they have backups. 👩🏻‍⚕️

  • Get out in nature. There is something so refreshing about looking at water, breathing in crisp air and seeing trees. Take a long walk, go picnic by the lake, hike in the woods, canoe, wherever, just get outside.

  • Be quiet! 😎Seriously, just sit and stare and breathe for half an hour. We are going a 1,000 miles a minute, we need to give our minds a break regularly.

  • Pray and read the Word. Give some true time to God to hear from him and build a relationship.

  • Breathe. Not the crazy, short, just-to stay-alive crap you’re normally doing. Sit and breathe deeply for several minutes.

No matter how strong and determined you are, you are human. You are certainly not stronger than our creator, who took a break after His work! (On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. Genesis 2:2) And Jesus even went away to be alone, rest and seek God throughout His ministry on earth—several times!

The world will not stop spinning just because you do. Hear me, and take solace in this hard truth: you’re not that important. 😳 And I mean this in the best way!

Give true rest a shot. You’ll be surprised how much you needed it. And no one is getting an award or gold star for running themselves into the ground. Fill up so you can pour out.

What are ways you take time to de-stress and refocus? 💆🏼‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️🙏🏻
